The bank's journey began in 2005 with the establishment of Ujjivan Financial Services Limited, which was founded with the objective of providing financial services to customers who had limited access to formal banking and credit facilities.

Ujjivan Small Finance Bank commenced its banking operations on 1 February 2017 after receiving a licence from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a Small Finance Bank. Since then, the bank has expanded its presence and evolved from its initial micro-banking focus into a diversified banking institution.
